What do I need to know about Farm Biodiversity Plans?
Agricultural land makes up approximately 55% of Jersey, with the majority of fields located within the Green Zone and in other ecologically valuable areas (for example Coastal National Park). As custodians of the countryside, farmers are in a strong position to manage and enhance habitats across the Island for the benefit of wildlife.
The States of Jersey Rural Support Scheme 2017 (RSS), which replaces the Single Area Payment (SAP), requires farmers applying for support to be members of specific environmental schemes; either Red Tractor (Tier 1) or LEAF Marque (Tier 2)
Both Red Tractor and LEAF Marque require the production of a Farm Biodiversity Plan (or Landscape and Nature Conservation and Enhancement Plan, in the case of LEAF Marque) as part of the accreditation process.
What does a Farm Biodiversity Plan involve?
These plans require a baseline audit of the owned / rented land in which the fields, their boundaries and any un-cultivated areas are assessed for their ecological value.
Once a baseline is established, key species, habitats and enhancement opportunities across the farm are identified. A management plan is then produced which sets out how the identified ecological features and opportunities for wildlife can be improved.
Enhancement recommendations may range from slight modifications in management practices to the creation of ecological buffer strips, field margins, hedgerows and conservation crops.
What happens next?
Please get in touch to discuss the process in further detail and to arrange a no obligation meeting with us to discuss the area of land you would like surveyed.
We are highly experienced in undertaking farm audits and producing the necessary management plans to gain either Red Tractor or LEAF Marque accreditation. We can also assess the farm on an annual basis to report on the implementation of the management plan targets, as required.
See what some of our clients have to say about our Farm Biodiversity Plan services
We were very impressed with Nurture Ecology’s professionalism and knowledge on conservation management and environmental enhancement opportunities. We were impressed with the plan that was produced and it was well received by our Red Tractor and LEAF auditor. To conclude, we would have no hesitation in recommending Nurture Ecology to any other businesses within the island.
