Preliminary Ecological Assessment

What is a Preliminary Ecological Assessment (PEAs)?
This ecological survey is the baseline survey required if you tick any boxes on the ‘Wildlife Trigger List’ when you make a Planning Application.
These surveys demonstrate that protected wildlife and habitats have been considered as part of your Application, to ensure compliance with the Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021, and the various biodiversity obligations as per the Island’s planning framework.
This initial scoping survey can take place at any time of year. -
How do they work?
A PEA needs to be undertaken by a qualified ecologist, and entails a site visit and walk-over survey. They look at the suitability of the site to contain protected wildlife, that may be impacted by your proposed works.
Planning and Land Resource Management may be satisfied with just the provided PEA, or may indicate further protected species surveys are required. We will advise you if this is likely to be the outcome early, as further protected species surveys are constricted by seasonal time constraints.
